Broomfield Hospital Renal Services opened in 1994 as a satellite unit of the Royal London. Our unit became independent in April 2000 and was redeveloped in 2004 to provide extra dialysis stations and a nicer environment. There are currently 23 stations on the chronic haemodialysis unit and 4 stations on the ward for acute patients and inpatients.
The new unit has a fully equipped procedures room which makes it possible for us to insert and remove temporary lines within the dialysis unit.
The Renal Unit has outpatient facilities which enable us to offer outpatient appointments for patients on dialysis in our own unit as well as patients who have been referred to us for follow up after kidney transplantation. We also work closely with the Addenbrooke’s hospital transplant team to work any appropriate patients up for kidney transplantation, including donation, and patients have the option of having their appointments here at Broomfield.
Our Home Therapies service enables patients to dialyse at home by teaching patients how to use the necessary equipment and offering support for these people out in the community as well as support during any inpatient stays in our hospital. PD, APD and Home Haemodialysis are offered under this service.
W also have 3 Specialist Nurses focussing on low clearance and palliative care; iron therapy and erythropoietin; and renal access/transplantation.
Since 2009 we have been able to offer our renal patients’ access to Renal Patient View.
Broomfield Renal Unit hosted the Eastern Regional Renal Meeting at Duxford in May 2010 in conjunction with Colchester General Hospital. Presentations included the level of nurse involvement in the management of renal bone disease, patients with challenging behaviour in dialysis units, sclerosing peritonitis, treatment of renal anaemia, resurgence of Home HD and end of life care in renal patients.
The renal unit and renal ward moved into brand new purpose built accommodation in the new PFI building during October 2010.
Patients are referred from Mid and West Essex and we have outreach clinics at Braintree Community Hospital, St Margaret’s Hospital in Epping, St Peter's Hospital in Maldon and at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow.
