The renal unit at the Countess was opened in January 2006 and is a modern, comfortable building designed with a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere in mind. It is part of a renal outpatient department that includes home therapies, outpatient clinics and an intravenous iron programme.
When receiving dialysis treatment at the Countess you will be able to relax in comfort while reading, chatting to patients and staff as well as catching up on the latest TV by watching one of our plasma televisions that are positioned around the unit. Complimentary drinks and snacks are also available.
The new unit has 17 stations enabling up to 76 patients a week to receive their dialysis locally.
Speaking about the new facilities, Renal Unit Ward Manager, Jane Lush, said: “Our facilities allow people with kidney disease to receive the specialist services they need close to home in a relaxing environment and make a significant difference to their quality of life.”
When you start your dialysis treatment you will receive an individual patient plan which will contain all relevant information on the type of treatment you will be receiving and when it will occur.
All members of staff on the unit are highly skilled, extremely committed to satisfying your needs and are always friendly and approachable. In addition there will be qualified permanent dialysis nurses on duty at all time who will support you during your treatment and will be happy to talk to you about any issues or concerns.
There is always on call cover in case of an emergency out of hours.
There are four dialysis sessions currently available at the Countess. These are subject to availability and occur on:
Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 07.30 until 13.00
Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 13.30 until 19.00

Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday: 07.30 until 13.00
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday: 13.30 until 19.00
Twilight shifts are ideal for patients who have work commitments and are not able to attend sessions during the day.
As well as providing information about treatment needs, medications and diet, there are always opportunities to talk to members of staff to discuss any concerns, issues and general feedback about your treatment.
Dialysis Unit Manager, Jane Lush, was keen to get the views of patients about the quality of service provided in the dialysis unit. Here are some of the comments made during a recent patient forum:
“The unit is lovely, the staff and patients are very proud of the unit, there is plenty of space between patients and all of the staff make every effort to abide by strict hygiene rules.” - Renal Patient Forum
“The unit in the Countess has made dialysis more convenient for patients who live in Chester. It is like one big family - the nurses and patients alike - and the unit is bright and clean. " -Patricia Moore
The renal dialysis unit is positioned in the newly furbished Outpatients 4 building. You can view a hospital site plan in the ‘When you arrive’ section of the Trusts' website (www.coch.nhs.uk). Alternatively if you have difficulty finding us, please go to the hospital’s main reception and a member of staff will point you in the right direction.
