About the unit

The Darlington Dialysis Centre was the first satellite dialysis unit to be established in the UK by the American company, National Medical Care, in December 1994. It was officially opened by Baroness Masham, Patron of the North East Kidney Patient's Association, with Dr Edmund Lowrie of NMC in attendance. Dr Lowrie had made a name for himself in the USA by championing high quality dialysis standards and quality assurance in favour of commercial success. These principles were adopted by the clinical team in Darlington, led by the first Clinic Manager, the late Carol Beck, and remain in place today.

Research and special expertise

The Centre has participated in the international Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (iDOPPS). Patients have also participated in the SHARP Study.
