About the unit

HISTORY
Led by Dr Harry Hall, Exeter Kidney Unit started dialysing patients in 1967, with the first transplant in the same year. Renal services moved from Whipton Hospital to the current RD&E main hospital site in 1984 where delivery of all care has since been centred, including having one of the busiest transplant units in the UK at one time. Transplantation has been jointly provided by Plymouth and Bristol since 1998 - patients are transferred back to Exeter for all follow-up immediately on discharge from the transplant centre.

Exeter Kidney Unit has grown substantially over the past 45 years to become one of the largest units in the South-west, providing tertiary renal services to a population of 1 million across Devon and large parts of Somerset, taking referrals from North Devon District Hospital, Torbay Hospital and Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton. Services are tailored to patients needs, being provided as close to home as possible across a wide rural area.
