About the unit

The unit was started by Prof Sir Roy Meadow who was soon joined by Dr Trevor Brocklebank. The first Haemodialysis session was undertaken in 1978, chronic peritoneal dialysis followed in 1980. Renal transplantation started in 1980. The Department started at the Seacroft Hospital moving to its current site in 1980.
Currently there are 4 Consultant Paediatric Nephrologists serving a population of approximately 1 million children. The Department offers a full range of tertiary services to the population of Yorkshire and parts of the neighbouring counties.

Research and special expertise

We are actively recruiting to both the TWIST and The Long-term tapering or standard steroids for nephrotic syndrome trials.
The prospective cohort longitudinal study to investigate patterns of adherence in children undergoing dialysis and the qualitative study of children and parents' perceptions of self-management of treatment with RRT in those undergoing RRT have both recruited in Leeds.
Through our Psychologist we are undertaking a qualitative bi-directional prospective study of factors influencing decision making in Staff and parents/patients delivery of care.
