About the unit

Derriford Hospital is situated to the north of the historic naval city of Plymouth and is set in a wooded green-field location close to Plymouth airport.Dialysis is now carried out in a purpose-built satellite unit 2 miles from Derriford hospital, opened in July 2011.

The Renal Unit moved to the Derriford site in 1981 and has been located in its current location on level 3 since 1986.
Mayflower Ward is a 31 bedded renal ward, inclusive of 6 level one beds and the transplant bay.

Derriford Hospital recently received a visit from the Department of Health who also paid a visit to Carey ( now Mayflower) Ward/Transplant Unit in particular. The preliminary findings where good, particularly in the area of infection control and cleanliness.

In June this year we introduced a self medication programme on Mayflower Ward/Transplant Unit for new transplant patients. This has been a great success and has enabled new patients to be confident with the management of their transplant medications on discharge.

The new Haemodialysis Unit has 29 dialysis stations including 4 isolation cubicles.Holiday patients are accepted on a pre-booked basis, vacancies permitting. Booking details below. There are 6 level 1, dialysis stations on Mayflower Ward for acute in-patients.

The Renal Unit has dedicated teams specialising in Transplantation, Haemodialysis, CAPD, Pre-dialysis, Arterio-Venous access, Renal dietary requirements and Staff Development on site. Staff development is facilitated by the Clinic Trainer Caroline Wright 01752 517896

We have now appointed a Transplant Nurse Practitioner to facilitatethe pre-transplant assessment and waiting list referrals. The Transplant Nurse Practitioner can be contacted 01752-439957.

Anyone looking into or requiring information on living donations should contact the Living Donor Transplant Co-ordinator on 01752-439957.

In 2006, we carried out 53 transplants, comprising of 17(CNHB) Controlled Non Heart Beating, 18 Living related and 18 Deceased Donor.
Between 01 April 07 and 30 January 2008 we have carried out 56 transplants here at the South West Transplant Centre Plymouth. Which has been a great start to the transplant year. (The transplant year runs from 01 April to 31 March.)
01 April 2007- 31 March 2008 we carried out 61 kidney transplants.
01 January 2008- 31 December 2008 was our best year ever with 75 transplants being carried out here at the South West Transplant Centre.

Our web site has been a great success since its launch in September 2006, the site provides clinical information to Heath Care Professionals and educational and informative information for patients and carers.
