About the unit

The Renal Centre is a satellite of Renal Services at Imperial College NHS Healthcare Trust. With the ongoing medical support of a visiting Consultant Nephrologist, the nursing team at Watford Renal Centre offer haemodialysis and associated nursing and medical care to West Hertfordshire residents. Patients and their families are encouraged to take an active interest in the management of their kidney disease and treatment, and are assisted as they learn as much as they chose to about dialysis. Home based renal replacement therapies and transplantation options are regularly discussed with patients. This bright unit was refurbished in 2014. The staff are welcoming, professional and well informed. Support is readily available from the renal specialist dietician, specialist counsellor and social support worker. Evening sessions are available three nights each week. Care is given with skill and compassion. Patient surveys reveal that those undergoing treatment here feel safe, informed and cared for. Family members regularly comment that they too are made to feel welcome and are encouraged to be involved in decision making.

Research and special expertise

Many markers of clinical outcome are measured, benchmarked and audited regularly across Imperial’s satellite Renal Centres. Patients at Watford are demonstrably safely and effectively treated. Locally led research has led to the establishment of evidence based protocols for control of blood borne virus transmission. Local work has led to the establishment of protocols and arrangements pertaining to safe practice in the area of “holiday” dialysis – something that the Watford team consider to be of great value to patients undergoing a relentless treatment schedule. The Consultant in charge leads within Renal Services at Imperial College on the provision of arterio-venous access via central venous catheters. The whole team at Watford work closely with surgical and medical colleagues at Imperial to ensure that where appropriate access via arterio-venous fistula is facilitated, created and maintained with skill. Promoting an ethos of “shared care” is a current priority. The staff and many patients see the value of enhancing partnership, either as a stepping stone towards a potential home based therapy, or simply to foster continuing independence and truly individualised therapy planning and delivery.
