About the unit

The unit initially opened in 1985 as the first PFI dialysis centre in the UK in partnership with Baxter Renal Therapy services. The current unit (The Elidir Renal unit) was opened in 1998 as a purpose build unit on the ground of Gwynedd hospital. The stunning views from the panoramic windows of the unit are those of the Snowdonia Mountains.
The unit consists of 16 Haemodialysis stations, which also provide Haemodiafiltration and Plasmaphoresis and a fully developed peritonealdialysis programme with CAPD and APD facilities.
We are about to start the tender for Satellite unit in South Gwynedd and the funding for 3rd consultant Nephrologist has been approved

Research and special expertise

The Nephrology department has forged a close links with the Sport,Health and Exercise Science Department(SHES) in the University of Wales Bangor. At least 9 publications resulted from the collaboration. The research projects funded were by grants from the R&D department and the National Kidney ResearchFoundation. Over the last two years an exercise physiologist was basedin the Dialysis unit.
We have just funded a PhD studentship to continue our joint research collaboration with SHES starting from May 2009
