About the unit

The Department of Renal Medicine is a Sub-Directorate of the Directorate of Medicine and has expanded rapidly over the last fourteen years. In 1995, Dr Stephen H Morgan was appointed to develop renal services for patients in the South West Essex and a two station acute haemodialysis unit was opened on Elizabeth Fry ward, where the majority of renal inpatients are now admitted. In 1997, the first phase of the chronic haemodialysis unit was opened and this was expanded from 8 stations to 16 stations in August 1998 along with a third acute station on the ward to coincide with the appointment of Dr Ian K Barton. In October 2000, a third consultant, Dr Aroon S Lal was appointed and an 8 station “minimal care” expansion to the haemodialysis was commissioned shortly afterwards. Since the appointment of Dr. S H Morgan as Medical Director for the Trust, Dr Michele Cafferkey, Dr Georgia Winnett and Dr Bassam Fallouh were appointed to cover 50% of his original sessions and expand the consultant cover further. A vascular surgeon with an interest in renal access, Mr Jay Menon, was appointed in August 2005.

In May 2009, the unit opened a brand new 10 bed satellite unit at Orsett Hospital. This currently runs two shifts each day on Monday, Wednesday and Friday with plans to expand further in the future.

Renal transplantation of our patients is performed at the Royal London Hospital and Guy's Hospital whilst Kidney-Pancreas transplantation is carried out at Guy's Hospital. Patients are repatriated for follow up at Basildon around three months after their transplant. Patients requiring in-patient investigation or treatment are accommodated on a 28 bed multifunctional medical ward (Elizabeth Fry Ward).

Research and special expertise
