A full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for all types of renal disease, including:
· stones and pyelonephritis
· acute, chronic and end stage renal failure
· renal transplantation
The service has a 34 bed Transplant, ARF & PD Ward, a 13-station hospital haemodialysis unit and a 15-bed acute general nephrology ward with bedside haemodialysis on the Southmead Hospital site. There is also a Renal Day Case Unit and Outpatients department.
Patients are also managed for long-term maintenance haemodialysis in 6 satellite units: 3 NHS units at Brunel Satellite Unit SouthmeadHospital, RUH, Bath and Weston General Hospital, Weston-Super-Mare andin 3 private company units in Yeovil, Taunton and in South Bristol at Knowle West.
Patients are referred to the unit from Avon, Bath and West Wiltshire, North and East Somerset, South Gloucestershire and West Dorset. The unit also provides transplantation services for patients attending the Renal Unitat Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Exeter from the East Somerset andNorth and East Devon areas and for some patients from Dorset.
Clinical Psychology, Dietetics, Pharmacology, Specialist Social Work and Renal Diabetic services are provided from within the multidisciplinary team
A dedicated home team of experienced renalnursing staff and relevant administrative support provides a full homedialysis service for all patients on CAPD/APD and home haemodialysis.
Technological support for all in-centre, satellite and homedialysis machines is provided on a 24 hour basis by a team of qualifiedRenal Technicians.
A team of experienced transplant coordinators provide a 24 hr oncall recipient and donor service and a growing programme for thedonation of organs from related and non-related living donors is beingactively pursued. This team works in collaboration with UKT based atFilton, Bristol.
Outreach clinics for Nephrology referrals are held at BRI, Royal Mineral Hospital Bath and RUH Bath, Shepton Mallet and Yeovil
The RenalService is fully computerised and all satellites are linked into thesystem allowing immediate access to all patient data from all sites byall accredited staff on a 24 hr basis.
Patient care is managed within two Clinical Teams - one for dialysis and one for Transplantation.
Strategy, Service and Business Planning is managed within a multi-disciplinary Renal Management Team.
Early referrals of patients with acute or undiagnosed renal failure are encouraged
GPs are encouraged to telephone the service about any renal problem.
The unit holds contracts for direct referral from pan Avon GPs, BANES, Wiltshire, Somerset, Gloucester and Dorset where the Southmead unit would be the most convenient renal unit for individual patients.
