University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust

The Nephrology and Transplant Directorate offers a regional service covering South East, West and parts of Mid Wales serving a population of 2.2 million. We provide a comprehensive range of patient services, extending from early detection and conservative management in the pre-dialysis clinic, to the provision of maintenance programmes to treat renal failure i.e. peritoneal dialysis (PD), haemodialysis (HD)and transplantation. Currently there are 1058 transplant(May 2016); 83 PD (May 2016) and 483 HD (May 2016) patients on our programme and last year we performed 101 transplants(2015-16).

Exciting developments within the Directorate include:
A community based Peritoneal & Haemodialysis service.

Development of a high dependency unit with state of the art monitoring systems and provision of on-line haemofiltration and haemodialfiltration therapies.

The introduction of specialist nurse roles: in the area of transplantation (live donor and recipient co-ordinators; transplant nurse specialist) in pre-dialysis we have appointed 4 Case Managementnurses, and we have a Home Dialysis Sister who manages our expanding home haemodialysis programme.
