Our renal services were first established at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Rhyl in 1971, and moved to the main hospital site at Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan back in 1980.
Due to an ever increasing service demand and advance in treatment options the unit outgrew itself and by 2004 a private finance initiative with the NHSTrust and Fresenius Medical Care was established to provide a new improved renal and diabetic facility.
The haemodialysis department has twenty one dialysis stations although at present not all are utilised. The unit offers acute and chronic dialysis, plasmaphoresis, haemofiltration and holiday dialysis.
At present the opening times are 7am - 11pm - Mon / Wed / Fri
and 7am - 6pm - Tues / Thurs / Sat.
An experienced on call nurse is available 24 hours a day.
The CAPD / APD service is based on site and available Mon - Fri, 9am - 5pm. Emergency support is provided out of hours by the Renal Ward 9.
The service offers both the Fresenius and Baxter systems for manual exchange and automated.
All patients are assessed for transplantation and once all the required pre investigations are completed patients are referred to the Royal Liverpool Transplant Unit.
Once transplanted patients are transferred back to Glan Clwyd Hospital Transplant Clinic which runs on a Monday morning and at present supports 70 patients.
The unit co-ordinates a proactive living donor transplant programme.
All renal related clinics are held on site in the new out patient facility which is co-ordinated by generic health support workers who are supported in turn by a team of specialist renal nurses.
The Centre also offers a diabetes service, running dietician, endocrine, and thyroid and diabetes clinics on site. |
