About the unit

Guy's Hospital is part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust which is one of the largest trusts in the country. The renal centre is one of the largest in the country providing renal services to the geographical areas of South East London and extending into parts of Kent as well as the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey.

It is also one of the country's largest renal transplant units providing transplantation services to the South East sector including King's College and Kent and Canterbury Hospitals. Around 200 renal transplants are performed per year. The unit has an active and growing live donation programme and offers laparoscopic donor nephrectomy and ABO incompatible and highly sensitised transplantation. Guy's is also a supra-regional centre for combined kidney/pancreas transplantation performing around 25 per year. Around 1000 patients with functioning grafts are under follow up.

A full range of renal replacement therapy is offered including home and daily nocturnal haemodialysis.

Inpatient services are provided at Guy's on Richard Bright, Patience and Aston Key (shared Renal and Urology beds) wards. On site haemodialysis is provided in the Astley Cooper dialysis unit. Satellite units are located at Camberwell, Lewisham, New Cross Gate, Sidcup and Guernsey and a Kidney Treatment Centre is located in Tunbridge Wells providing dialysis services and outpatient clinics. The Borough Kidney Treatment Centre provides in-centre and home dialysis services for people living and working in SE London.

The Guy's site is also a major campus for the GKT School of Medicine which is part of King's College London, and one of the largest medical schools in Europe. As a major teaching institution, a number of teaching and training opportunities exist, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. There is also access to a wide range of facilities including a state of the art library, IT services and personal development courses.

Research and special expertise

The recent designation of Guy's as one of five comprehensive National Biomedical Centres, together with successful bid to become an MRC funded Transplantation Research Centre provides world class research opportunities and facilities. The department already has an international reputation and proven track record with funding from major bodies such as the Wellcome Trust and MRC, together with regular publications in high impact journals. Major interests include the role of the complement system in renal disease and T cells in the development of transplant tolerance. There is a developing programme of translational research under the guidance of the Biomedical Centre.
