About the unit

The Inverclyde satellite unit opened in 1999 and expanded in 2007. There are 16 haemdialysis stations and a choice of day-time or longovernight dialysis.

In addition to out-patient haemodialysis there is a weekly nephrology clinic (general, low clearance and transplant follow up patients)and an in-patient consult service.

There are IT links to the base unit at Western Infirmary, Glasgow.

Research and special expertise

The unit participates in research projects related to improving quality of life for patients having dialysis. In 2008 we conducted an Art In Hospital project for patients during dialysis sessions that led to exhibitions of patients' art in local galleries and at the British Renal Society. The project was short-listed and awarded Highly Commended in the Innovations in Renal Medicine Awards 2008.

We have recently published our 10 year experience of long overnight haemodialysis (Powell J et al Clin J Am Soc Nephrol. 2009 Jun;4(6):1097-101)

On-going projects include provision of cookery classes to patients with established renal failure and providing access to hospice-based complimentary therapies for patients on regular haemodialysis.
